The Centre for Doctoral Training in Applied Photonics offers a four-year PhD/EngD programme combining industry-focused research and technical and professional skills courses. Led by Heriot-Watt University and funded by the EPSRC, the centre is a partnership between the Universities of Dundee, Edinburgh, Huddersfield, Glasgow, St Andrews, and Strathclyde and industry to offer industry-relevant postgraduate training. Research projects are co-developed between industry and academia across a wide range of Photonics spanning sensing, metrology, and associated technologies. After completing a two semester front-loaded technical taught phase our students embark on the research phase of their study. In the case of EngD students this is normally undertaken at the industrial premises, whereas PhD students are normally hosted by one of the partner institutions.
