Centre for Doctoral Training in Applied Photonics

Open for R&D and collaborations

About Centre for Doctoral Training in Applied Photonics

The Centre for Doctoral Training in Applied Photonics offers a four-year PhD/EngD programme combining industry-focused research and technical and professional skills courses. Led by Heriot-Watt University and funded by the EPSRC, the centre is a partnership between the Universities of Dundee, Edinburgh, Huddersfield, Glasgow, St Andrews, and Strathclyde and industry to offer industry-relevant postgraduate training. Research projects are co-developed between industry and academia across a wide range of Photonics spanning sensing, metrology, and associated technologies. After completing a two semester front-loaded technical taught phase our students embark on the research phase of their study. In the case of EngD students this is normally undertaken at the industrial premises, whereas PhD students are normally hosted by one of the partner institutions. Further details are available on the Centre website via: https://cdtphotonics.hw.ac.uk/

Open for R&D and collaborations

We continually refresh the projects on offer and the companies that we work with. Research projects are normally aligned to one of four themes: (i) Industrial imaging, visualisation and metrology; (ii) Photonic sensing; (iii) Computationally assisted sensing and imaging; (iv) Device technologies for photonic sensing and metrology. Participation in the Centre is open to any company with a research activity in the UK that falls within the scope of the above themes. The Centre can help companies identify a suitable academic partner, who may be able to bring complementary expertise to the project.
