The Centre of Biophotonics at the University of St Andrews is an interdisciplinary research hub advancing light-based technologies for life sciences, sensing and medicine. Our core technical strengths include advanced fluorescence and super-resolution microscopy, nano-optics and plasmonics, photonic biosensing, optical manipulation, and quantitative image analysis. We specialise in engineering and controlling lightРmatter interactions at the nanoscale to achieve high spatial and temporal resolution in complex biological systems. The Centre integrates instrument development, nanofabrication, and biological application, enabling rapid translation from fundamental photonics to deployable optical sensing and imaging technologies. Our unique value lies in combining deep optical physics expertise with real-world biological and clinical challenges, supported by state-of-the-art facilities and strong industry engagement. We contribute to innovations in diagnostics, precision medicine, and next-generation imaging platforms.
