About University of Glasgow – Photonic Sensors Group

The Photonics Sensors Group within the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow is led by Dr Mark Scullion who has a combined 17 years’ academic and industrial contract research experience in the design, simulation, fabrication and application of chip-based photonic devices, especially for sensing applications. Our expertise includes FDTD simulation, fabrication and application of waveguides, gratings, photonic crystals, interferometers, resonators and more. We are experienced in e-beam lithography, photolithography, dry and wet etching, femtosecond / ultrafast laser inscription of 3D microstructures, microfluidics, surface functionalization, utilising biological samples and building laser / optical setups. Our interests include biosensors, point-of-care diagnostics, antibiotic susceptibility testing, spectroscopy, security, identifying substances, environmental monitoring, laser annealing and photonic integrated circuits but are keen to help new areas too. We love variety and our prime mission is to help others solve problems, previously enjoying collaborating with scientists (microbiology, marine, medicine, computing), NHS, DSTL and industry.

Open for R&D and collaborations

Interested in helping a wide variety of partners (academia, industry, NHS, defence, space, medicine) in areas such as sensing, environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, photonic integrated circuits, security, substance identification, microfluidics, miniaturisation, surface modification. Not limited to these, always keen to find ways to help in new areas.
