About Heriot-Watt University – Marcello Ferrera

Heriot-Watt UniversityХs Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences (IPaQS) is a leading UK centre for advanced photonics, quantum science and engineering. Our activities span ultrafast nonlinear optics, time-varying photonics, epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and low-index materials, integrated photonic systems, and quantum lightРmatter interactions. Core technical strengths include femtosecond pumpРprobe spectroscopy, nonlinear optical characterisation, thin-film ENZ material platforms (e.g. TCOs), photonic device design and nanofabrication, and AI-assisted optimisation of optical systems. We combine fundamental materials science with system-level photonic integration, enabling dynamic control of light in time and space for applications in quantum technologies, optical neural networks, deep-UV generation, and advanced sensing. Our unique value lies in translating extreme ultrafast nonlinearities into programmable photonic functionality, supported by a strong IP portfolio and active industrial engagement. The Institute is strategically positioned within the UKХs critical technologies landscape in quantum, advanced materials, semiconductors, and next-generation computing platforms.

Open for R&D and collaborations

We are actively seeking research and development collaborations, joint demonstrator projects, and strategic commercial partnerships in advanced photonics and quantum technologies. Key areas of interest include time-varying and ultrafast photonic systems, epsilon-near-zero and low-index materials, integrated photonic platforms, nonlinear optics, and AI-assisted design and optimisation of optical devices. We welcome partnerships with semiconductor foundries, advanced materials developers, laser and instrumentation companies, quantum technology developers, and system integrators interested in next-generation computing, sensing, communications, and deep-UV sources. We are particularly interested in collaborative projects that combine materials innovation, device engineering, and system-level integration, including pathways toward IP generation, translational demonstrators, and spin-out or licensing opportunities.
