About University of Edinburgh

University of Edinburgh is world ranked top for industry, innovation and infrastructure (THE Impact rankings 2025) and top institution in Scotland and 4th in UK for quality and breadth of research (REF 2021). Hosting world-leading research in critical technologies and state-of-the-art infrastructure including supercomputing, our Quantum Software Lab (QSL) hosts one of the largest quantum software groups in Europe developing, testing, and validating practical, real-world applications for quantum computing bridging theoretical quantum research with industry needs to accelerate quantum computing adoption. The Centre for Electronics Frontiers (CEF) brings together diverse expertise ranging from materials science and electronic devices to circuits and systems pushing the frontiers of electronics through emerging nanotechnologies by innovating advanced nano/bio-sensors, safe and efficient energy storage solutions and novel Hardware for AI. The Scottish Microelectronics Centre (SMC) provides extensive cleanroom facilities with a full semiconductor/MEMS fabrication toolset and the ability to host staff from external organisations.

Open for R&D and collaborations

We are keen to explore potential research collaborations, joint development projects and partnerships across all the critical technology areas; given the University of Edinburgh’s breadth of expertise, research and technologies development and range of potential applications and markets it is difficult to be specific. We are also keen to explore potential opportunities to drive forward transformative solutions which exploit the unique breadth and scale of Edinburgh’s multidisciplinary R&D capability with that in the critical technologies, in particular quantum and semiconductors, to create novel disruptive real-world applications from electronics to medicines and beyond.
