About University of Glasgow – Semiconductor Photonic Materials and Devices Group

The Semiconductor Photonic Materials and Devices Group, within the Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering Division of the James Watt School of Engineering, advances semiconductor photonics from materials growth to device and syste level technologies. The group leads the University of Glasgow MOCVD epitaxy facility and maintains advanced cryogenic and high pressure characterisation capabilities for photonic materials and devices. Research activities span next generation semiconductor lasers for optical communications, AI hardware and precision sensing; high power laser diodes and photovoltaic power converters for optical wireless power transfer; and integrated onchip thermal metrology for future electronicphotonic platforms. While specialising in III-V semiconductor systems, the group also drives heterogeneous III/V/Si integration and photonics. Working at the interface of physics, materials science, nanotechnology and systems engineering, the group delivers core enabling technologies for advanced communication, power delivery and computing infrastructures.
